The course is a basic curriculum for those new to the prevention field. Topics include prevention research, program planning, evaluation, culture, media and human development. Participants learn together and apply information learned to their work experiences.  This training will support the State of Hawaii Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) credentialing.

Strengthening Hawai`i Families (SHF) Training of Facilitators

A two-day Training of Facilitators (TOF) to implement the Strengthening Hawai`i Families (SHF) Program.  SHF is a national best practice program designed to reduce risk factors associated with substance abuse and enhance protective factors associated with resilient families.  SHF brings family members together to emphasize values, define relationships, and develop communication skills to help families discover for themselves what works best for them.  The TOF includes a SHF program overview on the philosophy, background, and structure, effective facilitation skills, team building, curriculum activity implementation, challenging situations, recruitment and retention of families, and community collaboration.  Facilitators are presented with the cultural context and framework to best deliver curriculum activities to achieve both values and skills based outcomes. The SHF Training includes all training materials and SHF Training Manual; SHF Facilitator Certification; and three hours of technical assistance to each team of SHF facilitators completing the training.

Community Coalition Building

A 6 hour training will provide both a conceptual and practical framework including: assessing a coalition through a community inventory, building coalition capacity, identifying effective program planning, and developing a sustainable plan (implementation and evaluation).  The coalition training focuses on the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) with the goal of supporting strong and active community involvement in the SPF-SIG (State Incentive Grant) implementation.  The training will lead participants through engaging and interactive sessions that demonstrate effective community coalition building.
