The Prevention Resource Center (PRC) has the largest collection of prevention educational materials in the state of Hawaii.  Over 5,000 resources including books, monographs, videos, periodicals, teacher kits, curriculums, newspaper clippings, media campaigns and products are available to the public.

Everyone is welcome to use the PRC lending library!  All we ask is for borrowers to fill out an agreement form to be kept on file, and to bring back materials on time.  The normal borrowing period is two weeks, however if materials are needed longer arrangements can be made. 

The PRC is happy to mail outer island residents our materials to borrow as well!  We will pay to mail it out, and we ask patrons to cover the costs of mailing it back.

Breaking The Cycle Of Addiction And Abuse: Donna’s Story

HIV in Hawai`i: Local People, Local Stories
 
As the cases of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) continue to rise globally and on the mainland, we must acknowledge that this virus also affects us here in Hawai`i. We are not immune to it. HIV does not discriminate between men, women, or children. And the numbers are increasing for young people. Through the personal stories of two local people affected by HIV, this 20-minute video emphasizes the importance of education and compassion as keys to prevention. (DVD, 20 minutes)
 
Intervention Television Series
 
Intervention is a powerful and gripping television series in which people confront their darkest demons and seek a route to redemption. The Intervention Television series profiles people whose dependence on drugs and alcohol or other compulsive behavior has brought them to a point of personal crisis and estranged them from their friends and loved ones. Each intervention episode ends with a surprise intervention that is staged by the family and friends of the alcohol or drug addict, which is conducted by one of four intervention specialists: Jeff VanVonderen, Candy Finningan, Ken Seeley and Tara Fields. Intervention raises awareness about the alternatives and treatment options available to those who suffer from an alcohol or drug addiction, and gives hope to families who have nowhere left to turn. (DVD series)
 
Reality Matters: Prescription For Trouble

Thin: If It Takes Dying To Get There, So Be It
 
The HBO documentary film Thin takes us inside the walls of RenfrewCenter, a residential facility for the treatment of women with eating disorders, closely following four young women (ages 15-30) who have spent much of their lives starving themselves – often to the verge of death. The film deftly chronicles the pervasiveness of disordered eating behaviors, as well as the failure of our current health-insurance industry to address its clients’ needs, while never shifting focus from the women themselves. (DVD, 102 minutes)
 
This Place
 
  A 15 minute film that dramatically captures today’s youth drinking culture. This film shows the alcohol-saturated environment kids are exposed to and the impact of underage drinking. This Place offers a glimpse into communities that are taking action to reduce alcohol problems. This Place is loaded with information, dramatic in its storytelling and a must-have as a meeting opener to communicate on the underage alcohol issue. (DVD, 15 minutes)
 
Which Brain Do You Want? The Real Reasons Why You Should Always Say No To Alcohol, Drugs and Cigarettes
 
This video breaks through the perception barrier by showing actual brain images of people who have used drugs and alcohol. Based on extensive brain imaging research on hundreds of drug abusers we have shown that drugs and alcohol can have a serious negative impact on the physical functioning of the brain. (VHS, 40 minutes)
